SX 70 POLAROID TRANSFER

The SX-70 was a film made by Polaroid. Using an an SX-70 Folding Camera, an exposure was captured by pushing the film through a set of rollers and activating the layers of dyes in a small photograph.  

When a print emerges, Jane pushes around the layers of emulsion by using low tech tools such as knitting needles, wooden cuticle sticks, and burnishers. By applying various amounts of pressure and strokes, she creates texture and embosses shapes in the emulsion. Jane experimented with different techniques to discover that keeping the small print heated allowed more time to finish manipulating the image.

Jane has created hundreds of Polaroid Transfers and SX-70 images. Although Polaroid film and cameras are no longer made, she still uses many of these small images by digitally scanning, enlarging and printing images for use in new works.
